Olympic Village - Athens 2004

The Village was planned to be established in the region “Lekanes” of Aharnes Municipality in a 1240m2 area owned by the Social Housing Organization (OEK). The organizational board of Athens 2004 carried out an international architectural competition of ideas for the development of the Olympic Village.

 The plan included the accommodation of sports mission consisting of about 17000 individuals, and all necessary amenities such as meeting points, health clinics, offices, etc. Moreover, provision should be made for post-olympic coverage of the needs of 10000 people, beneficiaries of the OEK housing scheme, by creating a modern apartments complex with the additional urban amenities such as schools, shops, churches, etc.

The project was a combination of demands of both the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and those who compose the family model entitled to receive the benefits of OEK housing scheme. DOMES Architects constituted a work group along with the Professors D. and T. Biris, and with THEROS Architectural Office collaborators. This work team took part in the competition and was awarded the first prize.

Structure of the project:

_Urban planning and traffic study for 28 blocks.

_378 apartment buildings (72 two-storey, 264 three-storey, 42 four-storey) with a total of 2292 apartments (surface areas 85m2 and 115m2). Total surface area 254.100m2 of superstructure and 86.400m2 of basements with garages, storage rooms and supporting facilities.

_Planning for the configuration of outdoor spaces, pedestrian areas, gathering places, playgrounds, parking areas, etc.

The project was constructed by the same team (2001-2003).
